Student Mentor

We would like you, D2 and D3 students, to support the mentoring program.

Students who have just enrolled may struggle to start their lives in this new environment. Faculty members are not necessarily helpful for all problems students have. Considering this, advice from a fellow student’s point of view is highly needed.

D1 students need help from D2 and D3 students.

Your help allows D1 students to receive various support that faculty mentors cannot provide. For example:

  • Getting advice based on recent experience
  • Creating a network outside the lab soon after starting PhD life
  • Learning how to start a new life at Hokkaido University, Sapporo or Japan
  • Having a mentoring session in your first language (e.g. Thai, Arabic, etc…)

What are the merits of becoming a student mentor?

  • You can cultivate humanity by helping people. You will gain satisfaction and confidence in your ability to help others.
  • You will receive a certificate that you have worked as a student mentor. You can write your experience as a student mentor on your CV.
  • You can improve non-academic English skills if you do mentoring in English.
  • You can have a new relationship outside your lab. This may develop future collaboration.
  • One good turn deserves another. Your mentee may help his/her juniors, which brings a positive cycle in our school.

If you are D2 or D3 and can help your juniors, please apply here !
